Some forty years after they were created, Dieter Schnebel’s Maulwerke still prove to be valid encounters with the voice as instrument that, in the way they revisit elementary vocal sound generation and are open to ever new and original forms of performance, have retained their freshness and fascination. Director Susanne Elgeti follows the ensemble’s working process with great sensibility. The half-hour-long film version is exceptionally concentrated, maintaining the balance between abstract sound generation and narrative-theatrical elements and culminating in a marvelous dialogue between Henrik Kairies and Christian Kesten.
